ILUS - International Land Use Symposium 2023

Urban Analytics for Transforming Cities and Regions: Tools, Methods and Applications

4th-6th October 2023 at CEPT University in Ahmedabad, India

On behalf of the organizing committee it is our great pleasure to draw your attention to the 4th International Land Use Symposium on “Urban Analytics for Transforming Cities and Regions: Tools, Methods and Application”, to be held between 4th - 6th October 2023, in Ahmedabad, India. The organizing committee welcomes the submission of original contributions with the goal of advancing knowledge on urban dynamics towards sustainability in the Global South and Global North.

The increasing availability of open geodata through infrastructures and tools changes our view on cities as built and social systems. While methods for global settlement analysis evolve, also fine grained, in-depth approaches arise for better understanding urban livelihoods on neighborhood to city level. What unites tools and methods is their potential for a better understanding of processes and causes of global phenomena such as rapid urban growth, densification or suburbanisation in order to identify and promote trajectories of sustainable urbanisation. Here, new conceptual approaches to measure and assess spatial processes are highly needed. We therefore encourage interdisciplinary contributions that show the heterogeneous applicability of urban analytics, in particular geospatial data, analysis, modeling and simulation for a transition towards sustainable urban and regional systems. Contributions may be theoretical, methodological, or applied in nature. Research should address the following topics:

  1. Urban dynamics: Global perspectives on the structures and dynamics of cities, trajectories of cities towards sustainability, urban models for urban transformation, urban sprawl, densification, suburbanization, cities as complex systems, urban spatial networks and accessibility, and spatiotemporal big data.
  2. Resilient urban and regional systems: Urban planning and climatechange adaptation, land policies, green and blue infrastructures, energy transition, renewable energies, energy efficiency, and socio-spatial inequalities, Urban weather and climate, Urban air quality/environment, Impact of urban pollution on health, Urban forestry, Urban flood.
  3. Open data in planning and urban management: Open data portals, geodata infrastructures, governmental open data initiatives, co-production of geodata, citizen science, participatory approaches, data literacy in urban planning
  4. Big Data Analytics and Land Use: This topic contains contributions whose topical focus is related to use of big data, AI, Machine learning and modeling for Land use Science & urban ecosystem.

Accepted abstracts will be presented as oral presentations and be published in the digital conference proceedings. After the conference, selected conference presentations will be invited for submission to thematic special issues of the journals Buildings and Cities and Journal of Geovisualization and Spatial Analysis .
