(Le Corbusier on visiting Ahmedabad)
As India’s first UNESCO World Heritage City, Ahmedabad boasts both ancient landmarks and contemporary innovations that make it a mecca for cultural tourism. The city of Ahmedabad, now the seventh largest metropolis in India with a population of around 7 million is located in the western state of Gujarat.
Ahmedabad enjoys a thriving cultural tradition, being the center of Gujarati cultural activities and diverse traditions of different ethnic and religious communities. Some of the features that perfectly describe the city are splendid monuments, ancient temples and stepwells, and wonderful museums.
Ahmedabad played an outstanding role in the country’s struggle for freedom. The Indian independence movement developed strong roots in the city when, in 1915, Mahatma Gandhi established two ashrams, the Kochrab Ashram near Paldi in 1915 and the Satyagraha Ashram on the banks of the Sabarmati in 1917 that would become centers of India’s freedom movement.
A significant industrial city long reputed for its textile industry and today more so for its chemical, petroleum, international trade and IT industries, Ahmedabad is also known for its financial services industry. Overall, along with being rooted in culture and traditions, the city is soaring high in growth and development, home to several national, regional, and global scientific and educational institutions. Ahmedabad is well connected internally and with other cities and states. Ever growing, the city's public transport is constantly being upgraded with bus rapid transit systems and metro trains.
The Ahmedabad International Airport known as ‘Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport (SVPI)’ is an International Airport located 11 kms from the city center. It handles around 6 million passengers annually and has direct international flights to London, Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Doha, Singapore, Bangkok, Nairobi among other national and international destinations.
The average temperature in Ahmedabad in October for a typical day ranges from a high of 34°C to a low of 21°C. This can be described as pleasantly warm and comfortable.
